The New York Times provides a detailed breakdown of how the new $787 billion stimulus money is to be spent. You know what’s missing here? Tax credits for job creation. Yes, there are tax credits for hiring disadvantaged workers, but that needs to be extended to ALL workers.
After spending time actually talking to business owners about what it will take to get them hiring again, it is clear that this is what they want and need in order to get things back on track. Much of the stimulus package addresses the symptoms of the recession in forms of expanded unemployment benefits and government healthcare programs. The same holds true for all the foreclosure remedies that have been suggested recently. What would solve these problems is if more people had jobs so they could pay for things themselves. Someone with a full-time job doesn’t need unemployment benefits, TANF, Medicaid, or mortgage relief. Helping businesses put people back to work is the quickest way to get things back on track. That’s why tax credits for job creation needed to be included in the stimulus package.
